Easter Notes 2022
This week was my turn for my families bible study and I decided to do mine on Holy week. Bible study is on Wednesday so my lesson covered the first 4 days of Holy Week(Palm Sunday - Holy Wednesday). I made notes from my reading on the rest of Holy week and I am thinking of making this a personal tradition each Holy Week. Below are my notes for 2022:
Holy Week is mainly chronicled in the books Matthew, Mark, Luke and John.
- Palm Sunday: celebration of Christs arrival into Jerusalem.
- Matthew 21:1-11 - Mentions the need to fulfill the prophecy
- Mark 11:1-11 - Doesn’t mention fulfilling prophecy
- Luke 19:28-40 - “If they kept quiet, the stones along the road would burst into cheers!”
- Being quiet about your faith only makes the faithless celebrate be proud and celebrate your faith
- John 12:12-19 - Also mentions the prophecy and goes into that the reason everyone is out there is because he made Lazarus rise from the dead. (Note: Lazurus Saturday is part of Holy week in some denominations)
- Jesus also cleared the temple which was being used as a market this day.
- Holy Monday: Last Monday prior to Easter Sunday
- Cursed the fig tree
- Cleanse Temple: Mark makes it seem like this happened on Monday, while Matthew makes it seem like this is the first thing Jesus does when he gets off the Donkey.
- Authority Challenged
- In one of the parables he tells to the priest he mentions the line “For many are called but few are chosen”
- Holy Tuesday: Last Tuesday prior to Easter
- Matthew 26:6-13 : Jesus Annointed, it show’s the importance of taking advantage of the moments you have. Bethany was Lazarous sister.
- Matthew 26:14-16 : Judas betrays Jesus
- Holy Wednesday: Last Wednesday before Easter
- Likely a day of rest after two full days on Monday and Tuesday preaching.
- Sometimes this is called Spy Wednesday because the betrayal of Jesus by Judas is usually discussed
- Maundy Thursday
- Last Supper
- Jesus already knew the location Luke 22:10-13
- Communion Reading
- Jesus was a servant make sure you treat those at the head of the table and the ones who are serving you with the same respect. Luke 22:27
- Jesus Betrayed
- Why are two swords enough? Luke 22:36-38
- 1 of the 2 swords is used but Jesus immediately heals the captors wound. Luke 22:49-51
- Last Supper
- Good Friday (Trial, Crucificion, Death)
- Judas hangs himself. Feels sorry after seeing Jesus being condemned to death. It’s interestings that Luke 22:3 mentions that Satan enters into Judas. Would Judas have done that without Satan entering him.
- Robbers crucified w/ Jesus hurled insults at him as well Matthew 27:44 . Only in Luke is it written that one of the two robbers actually defends Jesus and is forgiven for his sins Luke 23:39-43
- Guy who fed Jesus wine vinegar only did so to see if Elijah would come save Jesus. More of as a test of who he is than out of any mercy for our Lord and Savior.
- Joseph of Arimathea gets the body for burial Matthew 27:57-61
- Saturday in the Tomb
- Religious leaders sealed the tomb to try to ensure the prophecy didn’t come true. Matthew 27:62-66
- Resurrection Sunday
- Mary and the Other Mary are the first to know Jesus is risen. Matthew 28:1-7 . God clearly chooses women here to be the first to get this message, these are the same women that were there for Jesus through his crucifixion, death, and burial as well. This to me signifies the importance of every man needing good women in your life.
- Instead of being amazed and falling on the knees asking for forgiveness the religious leaders who persecuted Jesus tried to cover up Jesus rising from the dead with bribes to the soldiers who saw it. Matthew 28:11-15
- “I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Matthew 28:20
